Rochet samoosas, jalapeno sauce and choc ganache

One of the greatest beauties of life must lie in food. It is simply sacrilegious to consider the wonders of life while ignoring the emotional and fundamental issue of fine food. By fine I am by no means referring exclusively to the kind of cuisine one would find departing from the kitchen of a French or Italian restaurant (it must be stated for the record though, that some of that rather intricate food is excellent, even if the price is not), but rather all edibles which fascinate those nerves on the tongue.

During one single meal at my grandmothers house I stumbled across (or rather ate my way through) a number of new exciting foods. That’s the one thing I know I can count on my family for: supplying the widest range of great tasting chow, including both classical (and trusted) dishes to the latest and more unconventional taste teasers.

Rocket samoosas were the highlight of the delightful meal. Interesting little creation, it is more of a right angled triangle than the traditional somoosa, which has gained international fame. This newer model samoosa comes complete with a face lift, and altered dimensions. The base of the savory is now increased (more to be break the visual mundanity of the traditional model I think) but enjoys no alteration in terms of height. Hence the flatness. The exterior’s modification includes a new coating – borrowed from its sister savory, the half moon. The breadcrumb covering adds a nice finish to the newer, flatter samoosa. The filling is perhaps where the magic of this new creation is situated. It’s a simple yet ingenious combination of three cheeses. Which cheeses I still must uncover, but the synergy provided by the combo makes for a delicious treat.

One point of note however, it must takes an age to fold these things into the improved configuration and yet another age to brush with egg yolk and roll in breadcrumbs. The chef has my sympathy but also my standing order.

On a hotter note, a must try for all food lovers is the Woolworth’s jalapeno sauce – undoubtedly the best ive had in many a year.

Alas but time is my enemy, and it is time I need to fully encapsulate the distinction of a chocolate ganache I had the privilege to taste in that same tongue twirling meal. So another time perhaps….
